Kieran White - Q&A
Why do you think the offsite sector is so important to the future of the construction industry?
Offsite can play a critical role in helping to alleviate endemic issues in the UK construction industry that have been well documented in the recent Farmer report – such as low productivity, ageing demographic profile of workforce, the cyclical nature of the work and transactional nature of relationships in the sector. Offsite can help drive change across these issues and as a result help address pressing national issues such as the under supply of housing
Do you think that volumetric modular is the future of the offsite industry and, if so, why?
There are a growing number of providers in the offsite sector and an increasing range of systems available. Different systems will have different applications and while I do not believe modular is a panacea it does present the greatest opportunity for taking more of site based activities and delivering them in a factory. Our current experience is that 50 to 60% of the overall project value can be delivered offsite and can see opportunities to increase this percentage further. The key benefits volumetric offers are speed of delivery, improved quality and certainty of cost and therefore as more work is taken offsite these benefits increase.
Why do you think members of the industry need to attend Explore Offsite at Ecobuild?
Explore Offsite will provide an opportunity to see and hear of different products and systems, and hear directly the experiences of those delivering projects using offsite systems. Under one roof it will provide an excellent opportunity to see what is available and assess its application to different projects
